Volunteer Opportunities

Airdire Public Library welcomes volunteers in a number of Library departments and to assist with a variety of Library events.

We are currently seeking volunteers to fill the following duties:


Liason for Bethany Care Monthly Visit

Seniors are the fastest growing population in our area! Did you know that by 2015 there will be more people over the age of 65 than under the age of 15?

We need you! Become part of our team to help prevent senior insolation. Come to the library and spend a couple of hours every month facilitating conversations with Airdrie Bethany Care Centre residents.  Help us make a difference in a senior’s life.

When: Once a month (usually the third Wednesday afternoon) from 1-3 p.m.

Where: Airdrie Public Library

Position Functions (Duties and Responsibilities):

In this position you will:

  • provide a comfortable space around the fireplace for residents from the Airdrie Bethany Care Centre. Many participants are either Alzheimer or Dementia patients, but not all. 
  • choose and read a short children's book on a topic chosen in advance (ex. the April topic might be Easter).
  • generate a conversation with the participants around their experiences.
  • show the participants the artwork in the library.
  • prepare tea and cookies.
  • coordinate with the Bethany volunteer coordinator prior to the program.

Volunteer Learning Coach

Position Summary: The Volunteer Learning Coach will provide literacy and learning support to adult learners wanting to improve their literacy and learning skills for personal development, employment preparation or further education.

Eligibility: Any adult, who recognizes the value of lifelong learning, has or is willing to develop an understanding of adults as learners and participate in ongoing training in adult literacy development.

Position Functions (Duties and Responsibilities):

  • Identify and set learning goals with assigned learner, plan and prepare lessons as required, provide appopriate feedback and ongoing encouragement to the learner.
  • Commit to a minimum of six (6) months per assigned learner and meet once per week for a minimum of one (1) hour with each assigned learner.
  • Submit progress reports on assigned learner and connect with RVSCL staff no less than once a month for updates and upcoming opportunities.
  • Attend an initial training session and other training opportunities when possible.
  • Abide by a confidentiality contract and a code of conduct.
  • Approach learners with respect, flexibility and an open mind.
Position Specifications:

Education:

  • Completion of High School (Grade 12 or G.E.D.).
  • Post-secondary studies an asset.

 Experience:

  • Previous volunteer experience an asset.
Desirable Knowledge and Skills:
  • Reliable, flexible and professional.
  • Openness to continued learning and training.
  • Creative problem solving skills.
  • Knowledge or experience in adapting materials to meet individual learner needs an asset.
  • Adult literacy training or teaching experience an asset but not necessary.
  • Strong interpersonal, relationship building and conflict resolution skills.

The following volunteer opportunities exist at Airdrie Public Library on an ongoing basis:

Circulation Services

  • Shelving materials
  • Shelf Reading
  • Assisting customers with SCOT (Self Check Out Terminal)

Book Sale:

  • help process materials for the library’s ongoing book sale;
  • sort and organize book sale items; and
  • help with promotions and special events that involve the book sale.  
  • The time commitment is a minimum of a couple hours per week.

Technical Services

  • Unpack, clean sort materials that arrive via courier and Canada post.
  • Alphabetize and file address labels
  • Unpack and stamp new material
  • Reinforce new catalogued print items with tape
  • Copy barcodes onto audio materials

Communications / Marketing

  • Print and fold materials
  • Stuff envelopes

Information Services

  • Organize Book Sale materials
  • Serve as a Technology Tutor
  • Assist with teaching computer classes

Special Events

  • Set up and decorate
  • Meet and greet
  • Serve or sell items
  • Assist with crafts and reading circles (SRP)
  • Sell tickets
  • Clean up
